Power Outage Disrupts Transport Across Czech Republic

FLY4STUDYCM — A widespread but temporary power outage disrupted parts of the Czech Republic on Friday, halting public transport and affecting several regions, including the capital, Prague.

The outage began around noon, bringing Prague’s entire subway system to a stop, according to the city’s transport authority. Service was restored within 30 minutes, but the disruption caused delays throughout the day. Prime Minister Petr Fiala called the incident an "extraordinary and unpleasant situation" in a statement on social media, assuring the public that restoring power was a top priority. The country’s power grid operator, CEPS, reported issues across four northern and eastern regions. A fallen electricity line in the northwest was identified as a possible cause.

CEPS confirmed that eight substations were affected, including a major one in Prague. Five were back online within two hours. Officials ruled out the possibility of a cyberattack or terrorism. Industry and Trade Minister Lukas Vlcek said the likely cause was a “mechanical malfunction.”

The outage led to a suspension of most tram services on the right bank of the Vltava River in Prague, while the left bank remained unaffected. Some train routes near Prague and in other parts of the country also experienced delays, but service gradually resumed.

Václav Havel Airport Prague, the city’s main international airport, was not impacted. In central Prague, many shops and restaurants remained open but only accepted cash due to the disruption.

Manchester United Submit Improved £60m+ Bid for Bryan Mbeumo

Manchester United bids Bryan Mbeumo at 60 million pounds

Manchester United have submitted an improved offer to Brentford worth over £60 million (\$81.1 million) for forward Bryan Mbeumo, as they continue efforts to bolster their attacking options under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

As reported by “The Athletic”, United's latest proposal includes £45 million up front with an additional £10 million in performance-based add-ons. The Cameroon international is understood to be keen on a move to Old Trafford.

Mbeumo, 25, is entering the final year of his current contract with Brentford, although the club holds an option to extend his deal by an additional 12 months. He joined the Bees from French side Troyes in 2019 and has since developed into a key figure in their attack.

This past season, Mbeumo delivered an outstanding return of 20 goals and eight assists, helping Brentford secure a 10th-place finish in the Premier League.

United have already secured the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Amorim is eager to continue reshaping the forward line ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.

Tactical Fit: Why Mbeumo Suits Amorim’s Manchester United

Bryan Mbeumo is more than just a consistent goalscorer—he’s a tactically flexible, Premier League-proven attacker who could fit seamlessly into Ruben Amorim’s vision at Manchester United.

At 25, Mbeumo has evolved from a raw talent in the Championship into a polished forward capable of competing at Champions League level. He’s been used in a variety of roles at Brentford, including as a right winger in both 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 formations, often combining effectively with Ivan Toney. He’s also excelled as a striker in a 3-5-2 alongside Yoane Wissa.

Naturally left-footed but competent on his right, Mbeumo plays with directness and confidence, regularly exploiting space and threatening in and around the penalty area. His attacking output is the result of intelligent movement and an ability to repeatedly find his preferred zones near goal.

Under Amorim, who favors a 3-4-3 system, Mbeumo’s ideal role would likely be on the right as an inverted No 10—a position that would allow him to cut inside, link play, and provide an additional dimension to United’s attack.

Data from the 2024–25 campaign underscores Mbeumo’s value in ball progression, with strong metrics in progressive carries. His ability to stretch the pitch on the outside or drive inward with purpose would give United a new level of fluidity in the final third.

Crucially, Mbeumo offers a plug-and-play solution for Amorim. Unlike other overseas transfer targets, he won’t require a long adaptation period, making him an appealing addition as United push for a return to elite European competition.

Czech Republic Submits Bid to Host €3.5 Billion AI Gigafactory Near Prague

AI Gigafactories worth 90 billion Czech Crowns
Prague Old town square Czech Republic

Czechia has officially submitted a bid to host one of Europe’s first AI Gigafactories—a large-scale data center designed to support artificial intelligence development—on the outskirts of Prague. The proposed site is located in the municipality of Jíloviště, just south of the capital, and the project is estimated to cost 90 billion CZK (approximately €3.5 billion).

The application was submitted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade to the European Commission on Friday, June 20, as part of a broader EU initiative to establish five AI-focused gigafactories across Europe.

Strategic Location & Infrastructure

The Zbraslav–Jíloviště area was chosen due to its strong energy infrastructure. According to Deputy Minister Jan Kavalírek, the site—owned by České Radiokomunikace (CRA)—already has access to 26 megawatts of power, with plans to scale that up to 77 megawatts in a later phase. This would be sufficient to operate around 100,000 high-performance AI chips.

Once operational, the facility would provide computing power for commercial clients, EU-funded programs, and Czech research institutions.

Czechia’s Competitive Edge

While several countries—including Germany, Denmark, Poland, and Romania—are also preparing bids, Czech officials believe they have an advantage: project readiness.

“CRA already has the necessary documentation and is ready to begin construction pending approval,” said Kavalírek.

The EU is expected to announce the selected host countries by the end of 2025. If Czechia is chosen, construction could begin soon afterward, with the data center expected to be fully operational by late 2028.

Backed by CRA and the EU

The proposal centers on land owned by CRA, a major telecom and infrastructure company that had previously planned a smaller data center—Prague Gateway DC—on the same site. CRA is now serving as a co-investor in the AI gigafactory project and would take on future operational responsibilities if the plan is approved.

“We’ve already developed Prague Gateway DC, one of the most advanced and largest data centers in the region,” said CRA spokesperson Anna Tůmová. “That’s why CRA is naturally involved in this AI gigafactory initiative.”

The European Commission has allocated nearly €20 billion (about 500 billion CZK) for the initiative as part of its strategic investment program in digital infrastructure.
